Default 383 motor

The roadrunner I own has a 383 racing motor and the problem I have is that there is no way of checking the oil level. I was told that it is a racing motor, in which, they run it once or twice, then change the oil, my question is: Where can I find the oil plug (that must be either welded shut, or has a freeze plug in it) so I can remove this and add a dip stick, or would you recommend installing a dip stick directly into the "after market" oil pan?

The hole for the dipstick is in the drivers side. Just above the pan rail about 4-6 inches back from the front of the block.(the 4-6 inches is aproximate, I haven't measured it or anything like that).

As long as the sump(deep part of the pan) is still in the front, you can install an oem dipstick and tube.

I had to plug the one in my 400, since the van pan, has the dipstick go directly into it, and the engine was last used in a car.

Hard to say what they used to plug it. I tapped mine, and put in an inverted hex head pipe plug. I have seen push in (frost plug like) core plugs that small, used for that job. Getting it out may be a pain in the a$$

Default Dipstick location

Look on the drivers side(left) just above and kinda behind the motor mount,Should be kind of dished in spot about the size of dime
Most people who block off the hole in the block use a small freeze plug of some sort, unless they weld it up,hopefully yours aint welded, you may have to scrap the paint off to find it if it was done right

Hope this helps

This is a pic from a 440. The dipstick is in the same place on the 383.
