Noisy speedo~~! Driving me nuts!

I was convinced the "Ting Ting Ting Ting" noise and the erratic speedo needle was a bad speedo cable. Seen plenty of them do that kind of thing. Also, in cold weather it was much worse.
Easy enough, replace the cable. Ordered one from the Dodge dealership, cost almost $50. Replaced the cable, same problem!!
It looks like the speedo itself is bad.
So, what can I do?
It is a '85 Ramcharger. Can you rebuild the speedo?
I can probably find one in a junkyard, but chances are it is just as worn our as mine.

does your ramchager have cruise(sp?) control?

my '84 ram did and the speedo would jump between 55 & 75 when running down the highway I changed the cruise control unit(with one off a junk car I got for free) and the needle doesn't jump around anymore (but the damn cruise still dont work)
