727 to a 4-speed on an a-body
I have a 1970 340 dodge dart swinger with a 727 in it. I am interested in converting it over to a 4-speed, or if it is possible, a 4 or 5 speed with an over-drive from some other car. has any one done or does anyone know what transmission I could use or what kind of adapters I would need? Could i use existing crossmembers and trany mounts to install the 4-speed?

You'll need of course the trans and bellhousing, crossmember, pedal cluster, flywheel, "Z" bar, all of the linkage, tunnel hump, clutch pack, pilot bearing, and possibly drilling the crank for the bearing. Look on your frame rail under the steering column in the corner and see if you have the bracket to mount the "Z" bar as well. There is a lot to do in this conversion, but also a lot of info on this site and many others about it as well. Good Luck!
BTW, the trans will probably the A833..... |

The 340 should be drilled now. Mine was/is. Ausy is right if your gonna go 833 or any youll need a hump, pedals Z bar and rods, flywheel. Cross member on mine is the same. See if your car uses the same trans mount for auto and 4 speed. Carpet may be differant too. Driveline. If your planning on any high RPM shifting a scatter shield is mandatory! Shift linkage.
Then the clutch. So far I like my Centerforce DF. Try ebay under Mopar A body. The 833 is a great trans. Got mine rebuilt added the steel shift forks, wind it up and jam gears! |

thanks for the info guys. I am also wondering if other manual trany's will fit also. Like the ones out of the new dodge trucks. And who makes the adaptors for these kind of trany swaps?

One thing that is always done wrong in these swaps is the hump in the floor. My Dad's car was setup for a four speed, but was factory auto, and the floor was butchered beyond recognition. The correct way to switch is to find a donor car for the hump, or order the hump from a company like Harden's.
One other thing to consider is that the donor car for the pedals should not be a six cylinder/318 with a three speed car. It is my understanding that the springs in the clutch pedal assembly itself are different from 340's/360's and 4 speeds to lesser motors with 3 speeds. This typically manifested in the clutch chattering a lot when street driving. This was also in a Mopar Muscle tech article a few years ago. |

Good point on the spring. I think the donior cars are getting harder to find. As well as Harden's, you could try Sherman's for a replacement hump. I believe they come in for about $99 plus shipping and they have a few different Mopars available.......
