machinests/fabricators-hood pins
while fitting my fiberglass hood (full frame using hinges and front latch)I decided that the best place to mount the hood pins (for more stability at the front corners) was to remove the front hood bumpers/stops, whatever their called and mount the pins there. However I will have to drill the holes out and re-tap them for the hood pin threads. the OD of the pin threads will slide through a 1/2 bolt hole. What size drill bit should I use to size the hole for the tap to get the threads right? I don't have a tap&die set so I will rent one from the tool place and nee to get the drill bit first to cut rental costs... yes I'm way over budget AGAIN..... Any help will be greatly appreciated

I can tell you what size to drill the hole but you need to tell me the thread size is and if it is course or fine thread

course threads, I figured I'd find out the tap size/thread count when I held up the pieces of the tap/die kit. I just don't know what size to drill the hole so the tap works properly and the hood pins grip the threads enough.....

well I looked in jeg and they sell two sizes 3/8 and 7/16
for 3/8-16 tap drill the hole 5/16 7/16-14 tap drill the hole letter size "U" or you could use a 3/8 (it is only .007 of an inch bigger wont make a difference) |
