Help Replace existing 360 with the Hemi

Just curious, has anyone heard if the Small block parts will bolt up to a 5.7 Hemi or is it a Hybrid. It would be great to get a Hemi and bolt on 360 Parts, Headers and intake from an older Truck and get the Hemi power.

nope the 5.7ltr Hemi is a completely different engine. it was a fresh design (which is cool, cuz they designed it so that it would be easy to add or remote cylinders (v12 hemi anyone?).

but yeah, dont expect anything to swap from any other blocks (although i hear some jeep 5speed tranny's may bolt up. but thats unconfirmed)

thanks

According to my local parts man the transmission is the same for the 318 or the hemi. The truck booklets list a 5 speed automatic option. Maybe I can end up with a hemi Challenger 5 speed auto without using my retirement money.

It would be quite a down grade. The new Hemi in its mildest form puts out 100 H.P. more than the 360. The new Hemi is a great engine with a lot of potential. The valves are small compared to other engines of similar size. There is lots of room for a stroker crank and larger pistons. This engine is going to be used in the new LX cars due out next year. You know they are going to up the power for their first rear wheel drive in years. The block does have some similarities to the 360, same bore spacing and angle of the cylinder banks, but parts are not interchangable. This is a good thing however, as putting 360 heads on the 353 would take power away from it. There is a great article in the Nov. issue of Hot Rod about the new Hemi. The potential of this engine is incredible. Hope this is helpful.

Actually, specific outputs for the 5.7 hemi and 5.9 magnum are similar, but the new hemi is a modern engine, with all the economy and reliability of newer design. You would need to use all the induction stuff, like EFI, that supports these features.

For street purposes, this is neat, but for the track, the 5.9 magnum is still going to be a lot easier and cheaper to go fast with, at least for a few years yet.

Transplanting a crate version, complete with mapped efi, the way they sell the viper motor, would be very cool...

The last specs I saw on the 360 say 245 HP and the new 353 Hemi is 345 HP, so did I miss something?

As for a crate 353 Hemi, there is an add in Nov. Hot Rod for a crate 5.7 Hemi. I haven't checked the site yet, but the site address is www.hotrodlane.cc if you want to check it out.
I totally agree with you about the 5.9 being better for track use, but I don't think it would take much to get 400 H.P. out of the new engine. Like bumping the compression up from 9.6:1 to 10.5:1, a little more cam and a set of headers should do it.

My crate 360 is rated 380hp, and MP makes a 395hp 360 crate.

More is available if you can sacrifice driveability.
