I had one many years ago after I got my first car. It was neat to be able to accellerate moderately from a stop and, depending on tires, road surface, etc., chirp the tires 1-2 and sometimes 2-3!

Although firmer shifts mean less slippage and heat. It was probably a bit too harsh for the constant shifting required on the street and it didn't have low-gear braking. I don't remember if I had any problems with it, but I wouldn't do it again.
There are firm shifting valve bodies that don't "hit" quite as hard as a full manual yet still retain the "automatic" features.

Having the no low gear braking in a manual valve body may cause premature sprag failure, especially in the rain or dirt if it spins/hooks/spins.

Use 'em all the time. I have no problem with braking either. Friends got one in a 440 truck. Super quick too.

I think it depends on how much you drive it and how much you like to shift.
I have a JW and for some reason it dont "hit" real hard. Its the only one I've ever drove. I drove a guys SB Firbird with a B&M "super firm" kit in it and it chirped the tires even on moderate acceleration.

Default What are you looking for??

If your looking for a crisp shirft with less sponge then go with any shift kit that strikes your fancy.
If you don`t mind,or enjoy shifting and you want a hard possative shift every time.
Then the full manual is the way to go.
I have used them for years both on the street and the track.
No ill effects.
You should know that there are 2 differant shift patterns.

Forward and reverse
P P
R R
N N
1 D
2 2
D 1

Be sure to get the one for your shifter.

Why don't you just put in a shift kit and remove the accumulator spring (don't need it anyway). This really firms up the 1-2 shift. Also, increase the line pressure by turning the adjusting screw maximum counter-clockwise (one thread should be visible) will firm all the shifts in drive upshifts and downshifts, longer life. There was an article that was in Mopar Action about 2 years ago talking about the same thing. You may be happier with the results. You will have the best of both worlds.
