Didn't 383 production cease around 72?

Do you mean a 67(not 76) 383 crank?

If so, they are exactly the same dimensions, but the early crank is forged, while the 78 400 crank is cast.

The forged crank can be used in the 400, but a rebalance of the rotating assembly will be necessary.

Again, I didn't pay enough attention.

The last year of the 383 was 1971, so you can't have a 383 from 1976 (it may be is a '76 car but the engine isn't original.

In late 1971, the cast crank was introduced in the 383-2 engine. All other 383's used the forged crank. So, if you want to do this swap, make sure that you have correct harmonic balancer.

I looked at the 383 A little more and there looks to be a date of 2.18.65 so I am guessing the motor was mage in 65. the number by the dist said B383, man I left the numbers at home. and my other said H400 (in my truck). At first I just took the guys word I bought it from. I got the whole motor for 200. Thing is it only had 2000 miles on it but sat for four years the left first three poistons are rusted and pitted severly. and the crank in my 400 is pretty chewed up. Thanks for your input guys.
