Anyone know a fair price for a 8 3/4 489 Sure Grip carrier with 3.23s?(rebuilt)
I currently have the 657 carrier and need to upgrade, the guy wants $550 OBO...thats canuck bucks, which is about $350 US.

LC....that's probably right in the game in US bucks.

742 or 489's with SG and 3.91's will bring about $500.00 US in my neck of the woods. 3.23's are perfectly functional, but will not bring as much. I figure about 150.00 to 200.00 for the steeper gear ring and pinion.

If it were mine, I would sell in the 350.00 range for the 3.23 center section.

Stay warm and Happy Holidays from South Texas!

Thanks Gotcha! Decisions,decisions......the 3.23s I dont need. On my 657 I have 3.55s in it now, and have the 3.91s for the 657...However am a bit leery about installing them and doing any clutch dumping with the 657...Dont see too many 8 3/4 489 carriers around here for sale......
You have a great Christmas too! I have your Dart pics on the fridge

LC....I have run the 741 small stem carrier with up to 4.89's and everything in between. I have never broken one. There will be people on the board who will disagree.....and I am not saying they won't break....I just have never had one fail with 10 inch slicks and launching at 4500. I used to run what I could find, when I could not afford anything better. (If you don't know any better....what can it hurt!)

Have fun!

Hey Little C!

That price is fair but before I would go with it, it would look around keep my eyes open. A 742 case with 3.91 or 3.55 or even a 4.10 may be had for the same price, maybe less. Just a thought. It will cost alot of money to change gears if you dont like how they are. 3.55 are the best cruzin gears while 3.91 are fun around town, and the track too. That carrier is not very desirable also.

LC there's a mopar wrecker in trochu, AB. who will routinely ship things on the bus, if you want them.

The place's name is Heavy Metal auto wrecking. The guy's name is Tim. He's a crusty biker guy, but his pricing is fair. 550 sound about a hundred high to me.

If you can't find the number with directory assistance, call me at the shop and I'll give it to you.(see my sign off for my number)

Hey Bob--a 489 case is just about as strong as a 742. If I was that worried about which was stronger, I would just get a 9" Ford and be done with it.

Yes the 489 Is a good case I must say. I still preffer the 742 case though. They have a better design in my opinion. No crush sleeve. I also like the older sure grips made by Dana better that usally find in the 742. The 489 are Borg warner and are not rebuildable. I definatly preffer the dana sure grip and the 742 case. But thats just my opinion.

I'm glad I live in the south. That's a 200 to 250 rear here.

3.23 is no good for me. I'm planning on going with a Keisler 5-speed. A 3.23 won't be too helpful, with that.
