Default 1970 dodge Charger 500 rear axle

Can anyone tell me what type of rear axle and gears are in a 1970 Charger 500, 383, 2 barrel, automatic. The original bill of sale does not show any option for this.

Thank you!

That info should be a code on the fender tag. Being a 383, it was most likely an 8¾. As it was a 2bbl it was most likely an open rear. It was also most likely a 3.23:1 gear ratio

Does that info come on the broadcast sheet too?

The Broadcast sheet is under the springs in the rear seat, Henry.

You may want to pull it out just for fun, even if the axle info isn't on it.

Yes, that info is coded on the broadcast sheet as well. The broadcast seat was placed in a number of different locations. It could be in the springs under the rear seat, in the springs behind the rear seat, in the springs under the passenger seat or on top of the glove box.

Question rear end ratio?

I'm guessing but the 3.23 was considered a performance rear. If I was guessing, it would be 2.92 or 2.83.

Just thinking out loud.

Hey Tarrbabe Don`t hurt yourself (He He )

I would say 323 0r 276.
However if you would like to find out roll underneath and look at the nuts that hold the center section into the houseing.
You should find a small metal tag held on by one of those nuts.
It will have the gear ratio stamped in it.
That is if no one has removed it.

Another place to look for the broadcast sheet is under the carpet in the middle of the backseat floor. We found one there on a '70 440 6pack Charger once.

I wouldn't be surprised if a 383-2 automatic came with an 8 1/4" rear end.
Does it have a bolt on tin cover on the rear?
