Default jump time?

i was putting a cable through the firewall on my duster (340) the other day, and when i got ready to leave, it wouldn't start. i had it running good when i killed it. it was backfiring through the carb. i loosened the distributor to retard it (big cam), and it felt tight. tried harder and it gave way, but i felt a spring or something vibrating when it did. still wouldn't start. i had a new cap and rotor so i put them on and got it to start. the dist. doesn't feel right, changes too quick, and you can see at the tach it dropping and bouncing back (the needle). well, now it won't start again. doesn't even seem to be firing. this doesn't bother me real bad because i'm building a 440 for the duster now, i would still like to fix it if it's a cheap fix. any ideas? thanks in advance...

Pull it out and rotate it, see if the pick-up to reluctor gap is correct...it may just be bad bushings or you may have lost the plastic lock off the bottom......see if you have any up and down play.

Did the rotor break?

What does the cap look like inside...contacts damaged?

It sounds electrical for sure.

Use an old plug. Stick one of the wires on it. Hold it on a good ground(the plug not your person) and see if it sparks while cranking.

If not, try the same thing with the coil wire.

If no spark, it's probably in the primary system. ballast res, distributor pu, module, all common failures.

Probably just a coincidence that you were working on it at the same time.

Unless... were you drilling a hole in the firewall? Could you have clipped a wirewith the drill?
