Question

I have a 94 Dodge Intrepid ES with the 3.5L V6 and I am going to be replacing the MAP sensor and the O2 sensor. I think that the sensor values have to be cleared so that the computer will recognize and use the new sensors with new, corrected values. Correct me if I am wrong. I was just wondering if these values could be cleared without going to a shop and hooking it up to thier computers. Thanks in advance.

these sensors are not actually adaptive so if your car is already running ok then I'd say don't worry about it. The adaptive memory will adapter rather quickly to the new O2 sensor readings . If you feel you want to reset it though You'll have to leave the battery unhooked for a few minutes. Or use a scanner to reset those valvues.

If you are changing sensors because of a problem you should disconnect the battery so the computer can re-learn the adaptive fuel factors. If you do not it will take a much longer period of time for the computer to re-learn.

Hope this helps

hey guys, just wanted to give you some field input on this topic. mopar computers WILL save any adaptive strategies they have learned, EXCEPT for the trans! unless the m.a.p. sensor is bad, leave it alone. changing the o2 is a good idea any way. these cars use a long and short term fuel trim, each will make corrections according to what the car 'needs or wants'. to completely erase the adaptive fuel or adaptive idle strategies the car must be hooked up to a scanner.

Not to shut you down Stanz,(what field are you in anyway) but Iv'e worked as a driveability tech for Chrysler since 1984, the computers adaptive memory is erased when the battery is disconnected, period.

As a matter of fact, only 1990 vehicles and newer can have their adaptive values reset without disconnecting the battery(with a scan tool).Older than 1989 MUST have the battery disconnected to do this.

Hope this will clear up some confusion.
