413 help
I am about to start putting together a 413. I have flat top pistons for a 60's 413 to replace the dished pistons. Now have a set of small chamber heads with the bigger valves. What type of compression should I expect? Best cam to run? the crank is steel with larger bolt holes than the 440's. what problems will I find trying to hook up a flex-plate? Any and all suggestions will be helpful. It is going in a 48 special deluxe businessmans coupe. to be driven just for fun thanks Ken

THE COMPLETE DRIVE TRAIN WILL BE UPDATED TO 44O + 727>>>>>>RESTORATION IS IN PROGRESS WITH THE BODY REMOVED, 440 + 727 PLACED ON THE FRAME RAILS AND RUNNING GREAT. YOU MAY BE ABLE TO HELP ME IN LOOKING FOR ANYONE WHO HAS CONVERTED ANY 8 CYL. CHRYSLER FROM DRUM TO DISC BRAKES USING THE ORIGINAL SPINDLES>>>>>> ALSO, I AM LOOKING FOR A CENTER DUMP EXHAUST MANIFOLD, WITH CASTING NO. 2205536. Sounds like you have a pre 1962 engine. That crankshaft will not work with a 727 torqueflite. A later crank ('62 or newer 413, 426 or 440) will fit and I recommend you get one. I used to build 426"s (1/16" overbore) out of 413's and they work fine except the cylinder walls are not real thick and cracks were not uncommon (in a race engine). '68 or newer 383, 400, or 440 heads would work fine. If you're running on the street, I don't think a compression ratio of higher than 9.5 is wise (9.0 is safer).

If your engine has dish pistons in it ,then some one has already been there and done that. I would also swap out those heads for some 452`s or something close to that in performance. As those older heads had an alumanume rocker shaft pedistale. This is a weak design in my opinion . Because it puts a lot of stess on the longer rocker arm bolts ,that are required. As for compresstion. It would depend on the use of the engine,as to how much is needed. Don`t get discoraged ,you still will have a solid setup to sart with. It only requires some updateing thats all.. |

Dan has a good point. The heads to my knowledge are inferior as to flow also. The 452's would be a way better head. Also the cranks are identical to the RB 440 and all of them are steel so use a neutral converter.
