Biggrin 383----====>>>440??????

I got a '66 coronet 500 with a 383 right now. I've just come up on a rebuilt 67 440. How much of a hassle is it to swap it up? Does it use the same bellhousing/motormounts? Am I going to need to do any serious slicing and dicing to my car? Will it clear my hood? ANY help is greatly appreciated, I really want this monster under the hood of my car!

I am pretty sure it will fit. the mounts and stuff are the same but it has a higher deck about 3/4" if not mistaking. This will make header clearences tight but not impossible. If it has a really High rise intake hood problems may arise. My brother in law has a 66 coronet with a 440 and a performer rpm manifold with a 1' spacer and his hood clears with a low profile air cleaner. Hope this helps.

It's an afternoon bolt in job... at least it was in my charger 383 to 440. Enjoy!

Later,

Greg

As far as the flex plate and converter it will match good. Are you running stock exhaust manifolds? They put Hemis in those cars so rum should not be a problem.

The only thing you may have to modify, is the exhaust.

The 440 is taller and wider, so depending on what exhaust you have, a modification may be in order.

I did the same swap to my dad's 66 charger. The drivers side had to be cut, about three feet back of the motor. A slight twist, then sleeved over the cut with a larger piece of pipe. Then it was done.

The modification only took me an hour, but it took me 2 hours to figure out why the exhaust wouldn't fit.
