Default rough idle for my 318

I've just installed a edelbrock 600 manual choke and edelbrock performer on my 318 auto. Although is seems to run just fine I have a rough idle and it's a little rough just off idle. Now that I think about it, it was rough before with the stock 2bbl.

Anyway, I've checked the timing, plug wires are good, plugs are good, I believe I have the throttle linkage to the tranny adjusted correctly ( I don't know if this could effect it anyway), no vacuum leaks, new coil and pertronics pointless distributor.

What could it be? I plan on checking compression, and I haven't messed with any settings on the edelbrock since I put it on, should I?

I would guess a burnt valve or three. Do the compression test, and by the way, what is your vacuum like? Hook up a vacuum guage and give us a reading and as well watch the needle, if it vibrates back and forth quite a bit, it's probably a valve.

At idle the vacuum read about 16" and steady, in drive and at idle it read about 13" and wiggled a bit but less than 1" either way.

Sounds like you may need to tweak the idle mixture a little. Also, if the vehicle has EGR, check that. Aftermarket performance carbs don't seem to get along too well with EGR setups.

Actually I've solved the problem. My power brake booster was the culprit. When I disconnected it, the engine ran perfectly. It's funny that I didn't see more eratic behavior with the vacuum gauge. I anxious to re-check vacuum with the new booster is on.
