Default Need a ballpark jet size...

A friend of mine has a 440 that isn't making near as much power as it should. We are thinking that maybe the carb is jetted wrong, since we can't find anything wrong with the engine. Specs are as follows:

bored +.030
new, stock 1967 HP440 cam
1-3/4 inch headers
346 heads, stock
Performer RPM intake
K+N air cleaner
Edelbrock 750 carb
135 psi cranking pressure

Any suggestions as to ballpark jetting on this carb? The car it's in is a '73 Charger with auto tranny.

Have you looked at the plugs yet? You could be barking up the wrong tree.

Question JET SIZE = POWER LOSS

I HAVE SOME OF THE SAME QUESTIONS. MAYBE WE CAN SHARE INFO ON THE GREAT 440'S

MY 440 IS SITTING ON THE FRAME RAILS OF A 1947 CHRYSLER, NEW YORKER, CLUB COUPE. NO WHEELS YET.
<<<<SEE PHOTO>>>( AT: "VINTAGE MOPAR CHAT" UNDER:
" 1947 CHRYSLER, NEW YORKER, ( 8-cyl.) could not attack the same photo to this post.??????????
I AM USING A 750 HOLLEY WITH 72 JETS. THIS IS THE WAY IT CAME OUT OF THE BOX. STARTS GOOD>>>>>RUNS GREAT.
I DID INCREASE THE HEAT RANGE ON THE PLUGS BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT BURNING CLEAN. I HAD THOUGHT ABOUT CHANGING JETS FIRST, BUT THE PLUGS SOLVED MY PROBLEM.
WHAT ARE YOU PLUGS??????????
WHAT SIZE ARE YOUR JETS??????
WHAT TYPE IGNITION ARE YOU USING?????
WHAT TIMING ADVANCE HAVE YOU SET?????
WHAT IS YOUR DWELL SETTING?????
HOPE YOU CAN GET THE 440 GOING GOOD. <<<<<<<IT JUST TAKES A LITTLE TIME.

PLEASE REPLY TO THIS WHEN YOU FIND TIME.

You need to open her up and look what the jets are now! Then try move a couple jets sizes and test how it runs. I figure some were between 78-82, but just a guess.

Jets may be some of the problem, but unless they are way off, I'd also pay attention to base timing, total timing advance, fuel delivery at WOT, and also check to make sure the throttle cable is adjusted properly.it's always all the little things......djs

I have a Carter 750(same as edelbrock) on my 440 with the MP .474" cam and I had to jet it down to .107 ( .110 out of the box) jets in the primaries made a big difference. Get a Carter strip kit and experiment with different jets and metering rods.
