Mopor 727 hard core tranny
I have changed my mind about putting a four speed in my 76 dart, I am going to go with a 727, so the four speed< from a 383 superbee> is for sale<tampa fl> I want to build a hardcore 727 with a slap shifter, does anyone know any good kits four this tranny to make it shift really quick and possibly change to a four speed instead of three speed, and has anyone had any experience
Will a 727 out of a dodge van with a 318 or 360 work in a A-body and are they good 727's thanks a lot Ben tampa fl |

So long as your running a SB, you should be fine with that. If not, look around for a Newport or New Yorker that would have the B/RB 727 for you. Look at some of the B&M reprogramming kits available for about $225. You'll still need a convertor as well, but that can be decided by your cam.
BTW, What do you waqnt for the 383 bellhousing? I got everything else... Ausydad@yahoo.com P.S., there is a guy on Big BlockDart.com that redoes Mopar Trans and would probably have the best info for you... |

bell housing

If your bell houseing has 2 diferant bolt patterns /8 holes instead of only 4. Then it is also a 4 speed bell houseing. I would be suprised if it only had 4 bolt holes for the trans. |

A&A Transmission (aandatrans.com) specializes in Mopar 727s and 904s. They have all the different parts/kit you will need including programmable governor kits to customize your shift points and full manual valve bodies. They may also be the ones to ask about the conversion to 4-speeds.
A 727 from a van will fit in an a-body. They are exactly the same unit. I have pulled apart van and passcar 727s and I can't tell the difference as far as the internals. |

If you intend to use the factory slap shifter with a van transmission, check the bottom of the tailhousing for the two mounting lugs for the shifter bracket (see pic below), most trucks and vans won't have them.
The B&M Transkit is a good overhaul kit for the do-it-yourselfer, it has the overhaul parts and a reprogramming kit. Gearvendors http://gearvendors.com makes an overdrive that goes on the rear of the trans for that extra gear but they're a little pricey. A factory 4-speed Torqueflight can be swapped in but it requires major surgery to the floors. |

The B&M trans kits along with TCI's are over priced and over rated. I get a kit for my tranny's locally for 45$. For 10 extra bones you can get filter & pump bushing too. The clutches are made by Raybestos. You think that getting a tranny kit you get a shift kit too, which is nothing but instructions on were to drill and take parts out. I guess I am lucky my tranny guy only works on Mopar trannys. He is very knowlegable on them and says that the kits from Napa are better than the ones from B&M, or TCI! For way less money. Just tring to save ya some $$$$$$$$$$$.

Just to clarify, the B&M Transkit not only contains the overhaul parts but has instructions on how to modify the trans for performance use (you won't find that in a NAPA kit) and a full reprogramming kit that contains a whole lot more than instructions on where to drill, etc. The quality of the materials in either kit is good.
If you're an experienced builder there are many paths to take but for the first time builder the all-in-one kit is a better way to go. |
