Wink My 318 project is postponed again

My billion horsepower 318 ( at $1.00 per hp) has been postponed once again. My brother's Chevy 400 came in yesturday with a flat lobe and 1/2 a lifter.

This brings me to the question. Have the cam folks forgotten how to make cams? It seems these days that I am hearing more and more about lobes vaporizing. The old Iskys were swapped from engine to engine and reused over and over without harm, but these days, just thinking about a cam change will wipe the lobe completely off the cam currently in the engine.

Two of my last three rebuildable 318 cores have had a wiped lobe. It must be contagious as I know have one in an engine that I built last year. The current bad cam is a CompCams 305H with springs that have 125# seat and 290# open and was broke in properly a year ago. Never before have I experienced a cam lobe problem, but now I have. Gee, it is nice to become more experienced!

If the problem were in the cam, all the lobes should have the same problem. That usually isn't the case. The problem ususally starts when the lifter is not rotating properly. After it begins to wear, there is nothing you can do to stop it.

Would a set of roller lifters, and a roller cam solve that problem, and afford a little more "grind" in the cam???

Sure, but it also costs a couple of bucks more. I just got so fed up with the problem after wiping out three MP 296/.557" cams, I invested the money needed.

Search lifters in the archives I wrote a long rambling post on the lifter situation in the US and why we're having these problems.

It's not your fault...it's a lifter failure.

The last cam in my 318 was a 304/.454/108 ( hyd ) house grind from PAW for cheap. It worked really well for me and I will reuse it for the first few miles on the new motor while I set in the timing and carbs close before I try to break in a fresh cam with dual carbs and questionable timing. Either way, PAW has been really good to me for the $110 I spent on cam and lifters.....

Default Holey Lifters

I will get the solid lifters with the hole in the base. Maybe this will help keep them break in and live longer. Any good or bad comments about these?

Jeeze you guy's are keeping me busy...I just did a day's research on the Schubeck lifters and posted the info on the Drag Racing board if anyone is interested.

Whose making the Hole In The Bottom solids? I'll check it out with my inside sources...I feel like a reporter for the National Enquirer...."Lifter Highjacked By Space Ship shaped like a Chevy Logo"...eeeekkkk
