3" or 2 1/2" exhaust?
I am building a mild 440 with Edelbrock RPM intake, holley 800 carb, Hughes cam (219/223 duration,.489/.504 lift, 112 degree) and headers with a 3" collector. The heads are stock 452's that may later see work. I am also considering 1.6 ratio rockers for later. The 440 is in a Ramcharger with 456 gears and 727 tranny. Should I go with 3" or 2 1/2" exhaust? Many thanks for your help.

As mild as your combination is the 2.5" duals would be fine, and easier to fit. The 3" system would look cooler and probbably be louder, but I'm not sure you would see much difference in performance.
The trick is smooth kink free exhaust tubing and good flowing mufflers. |

I'd go with a 2½" system with an X-pipe

I second Ehostler, plus
...also use Dynomax Welded Ultraflows, they are mostly resonant free and outflow Flowmasters to boot. Oh jeez, there I go opening THAT can of worms again! 440cj

You can't beat the sound of a healthy BB Mopar with dual 3" exhaust (w/ an x crossover),and some chambered mufflers!

Ramcharger,
I'm running a 440 that's similar to yours in my '68 Charger. I swapped from 2-1/2" dual exhaust (cheap turbo mufflers) to 3" aluminized exhaust with Flowmasters and H-pipe. Here's what I found: - Sounds a little louder, and throatier (you hear the cubes more) - Sounds WAY cool at wide open throttle - Car feels more responsive overall - Lightened my wallet more than 2-1/2" exhaust would have Consider 3" exhaust now if you plan on future power upgrades (more head flow, cam, gears, etc.). 451 is right - whether you go for 2-1/2" or 3" tubing, make sure you find a good shop that will use a mandrel tube bender to create nice smooth bends. If your performance level is going to stay pretty much the same, I'd check out the overall price difference and let that be the deciding factor. |
