Help SB Stroker crank balance

Im having my 4" cast stroker crank externally balanced, the machine shop says they have to add mallory metal to balance it, and that it will cost me more. I thought mallory metal was just for internal balance? Any comments will be appreciated. Im using KB pistons , eagle rods. Thanks

You definately need to balance the reciprocating assembly, but you shouldn't need much to get that assembly into spec. Granted this is a cast crank so it is "externally" blanced and requires the 360 weight set up in "original" form. If they are going to blance for internal (which sounds like what they are go ing to do) the Mallory is a good choice, but shouldn't be very much extra. You might ask how much they estimate they are going to use and how much extr it will cost before they start.

By the way is this a reputable Mopar shop?

I recently had my 4" crank balanced and my machinist told me it really depends on the weight of the reciprocating parts (taken here to mean rod, bearings, piston, pin, the amount out of spec the factory cast is, and the balancer/flywheel/torque converter combo. The more any of these components are deviated from 'stock' most likely the more difficult the assembly will be to balance.

I used stock rods with KB356 pistons and my reciprocating assembly throw weight was 1360g. I was told I had to have a combination (internal & external) balance. Mallory metal was used. Plus weight was taken from the flywheel. The total cost was about $500 for materials and labor.

Mallory metal cost me $88 first piece and $50 each additional piece thereafter. My machinist need to use 3. My entire cost was $500 for the balance.
