I need some help picking...
I need to figure out what kind of a rig to buy to tow my horse trailer. My health forces me to get rid on all the in-progress projects I have and buy something I don't have to wrench on. The trailer weighs around 6500 loaded, and I'd like your ideas on what to get. My budget is $6500 to $8000. I'd consider just about anything, from a (finished) old car to a fairly late model Dakota or Ram. Just about anything (MOPAR) that will safely tow it. Please let me know your recommendations.
By the way - all my projects and parts are for sale - '67 Imperial, '75 Ramcharger, '79 Jeep CJ-7, '73 3/4 ton Power Wagon, '67 Barracuda F'back, a core 360, and a couple of 440s. Also a couple of tons of misc. parts. Anybody that's interested should let me know. Thanks for your help. |

Sorry to hear about the health Doug. I hope it will turn around for you. As far as towing, the first thing that comes to my mind for low maintenace and tough strength would be a Cummins dually Ram. Take a look around for one that was NOT a fleet vehicle, and the best of luck to you...

Sorry to hear it, Doug.
I, too, vote for a Cummins. Have a look over on TheTurboDieselRegister for an early second or good first gen model. |

I was starting to worry about you Doug. You've mentioned your health before, and I haven't noticed a post of yours, for some time.
I know my dad has had great luck towing with his 74 dodge 3/4 ton, club cab. He bought her new, back then. But upgraded it from the 360 4spd to a 440(in 91)and an industrial 5 speed (in 99) Regretably, I will be getting it from him in the next few months, because of health reasons. With your budget, I'd go with a V-10 dodge. These things pull quite hard, and there are a lot of nice accessories available. I personally don't like the driving characteristics of the diesel. If you're used to a responsive gas engine, the drivability of the diesel is quite different. You diesel guys will note I said different, not better/worse. That's just my opinion. |

Very sorry to hear about your health. for 6-8k, you will most probably be buying something with some miles on it, so I would vote diesel. And if you find one with 100k on it, it is just broken in nice for you. and if it is primarily a tow rig, definately a 1 ton dually.
