Auto to a stick?
I was just checking out ebay and was wondering how hard it was to swap a 4-speed into an automatic car. Would it be possible, what would I have to do, and if so how long would it take? Thanks.

it can be done, but you have to get all your ducks in order. plus its a big job, not for the faint of heart.there was an artical in high performance mopar last year that delt with doing that in a fart swinger. very in depth. other guys here might have it available.good luck.

it can be done, but you had better look for a complete parts car or the main word is headache. Ive done it, and am currently doing it again...why-oh-why do I submit myself to these tortures...the current one ive been collecting parts for 2 years, and still short...its a long and expensive list, it would probably be better to just spend the money on a really well built automatic unit, and a quality torque converter..
and even better if you plan on racing it at all-you can bracet race with a 4 speed, but usually weak motor with an auto behind wins that game. |

4 speed into a Automatic car usually requires:
1. 4 sp hump welded in for strength. It is shaped more like a box than a tunnel and has clearance on the driver side for the shifter bars 2. the clutch pedal assy. 3. The ball stud pivot that attaches to the frame 4. Z bar 5. 833 Trans (correct for body style) 6. Shifter bars if the trans doesnt come with them 7. flywheel, correct crank, or provisions for a pilot bushing, clutch 8. recurved distributor and carb mods. 9. Shifter 10. different Headers if yours dont work with a manual 11. Driveshaft hack if yours is not the right length afterwords. 12. new front carpet piece since the old one is formed to the old skinny hump. |

I've done one with a parts car, and 2 without. The parts car one, was by far the easiest.
It is a very big job. I would estimate that it would be at least a 20 hr job for a pro who has done one, and knows how to weld. That's not including the tear down on the parts car. More like 40 hours for a guy feeling his way through it(like I did, on my first one) Don't make any plans for a few weekends in a row. And don't tear it apart and leave it for a while, or it will take twice as long. |

Thanks for all the help. I know it will come in handy when I decide upon which car I will buy.
