Question Other sources for Dana 60s?

What vehicles can be used as donors to grab a Dana 60 from that can be cut to fit in an A-Body?

This is an old post but I wanted to ressurect it seeing as I was curious about the same thing. What type of donor car can I find in a junk yard or anywhere for that matter that I could strip the dana 60 from and swap into an a body?

Hey Deacon. I have been doing some research on this and have come up with a couple leads. No direct bolt-ins though....

Moser sells new forged CNC made axle housing ends that can be easily butt-welded to a cut housing. The housing ends will also allow us to go to a junk yard and pull an entire brake set up off of a Mopar and bolt it right on. - $70 a pair. Also, this will require the purchase of axles made custom for the rear.

67-85 Ford F100, F150, and F250s use a Dana 60 which had the same internals as Chrysler pass cars. The axles, brakes, etc probably won't be the same. But.... I am wondering if the smaller F100 may have the 5x4 1/2" bolt circle on it , not sure though, I'm not a Phord guy. But if that's the case, the option will exist to go get the rear cut down and the axles cut and re-splined (only if the axle is a semi-floater, like an 8 3/4"). A guy I know that works in a Race Chassis shop also works part time from his house at night. $250 to cut the rear and cut and re-spline the axles.

I deal with a junk yard close to my parents house for older vehicles. I called him Saturday and he told me I could have a bare Dana60 housing out of a truck for $20!!!! I am assuming that if the axle I find has more to it, such as axles, drums, gears, etc. then the price will go up.

A guy I work with restored a '69 Hemi/4spd Road Runner. It was a basket case when he got it and the Dana 60 was missing. Not wanting to pay the $ for a correct rear, he found an axle housing from a van (maybe Ford) that had a 4.10 ratio 30 spline peg leg carrier, cut off the ends and spring pads, welded on new Mopar ends, spring pads and used Green axle bearings (so he didn't have to worry about adjusters and perfect housing width) on the axles out of the 8 3/4" rear that came with the car. For an A body the same can be done but longer 8 3/4" axles (C body or truck) would be used by cutting them down and resplining. Of course aftermarket axles can be used at a higher cost. The truck/van Dana 60 housings don't have the pad for a pinion snubber. I don't know where the above car is now, but if you ever see a dark blue with black vinyl top '69 Hemi/4spd RR at a show, check out the rear, no snubber.

Yeah, the housing ends from Moser are for 8 3/4 and Danas. This swap could wind up being a LOT less than one of the custom Dana 60s that are being sold.

Need a chop saw, some math skills and some welding skills.

Ford trucks are the same - no snubber mount. But I am sure you can fab up a plate easy enough and weld that on too....

'66 Dartman, you mentioned Ford F-100 may have 4 1/2" bolt circle, unfortunatley not. All were 5 1/2" like '85 up D-100s and '74 down W-100s.

Oh ok. That still might leave plenty of room to redrill them for 4.5" Then you'd definately have to use the Phord brakes though...

A friend of mine just did this same deal with a Dodge truck Dana 60. He had Mark Williams cut the truck ends and weld the full floater style ends on it. They also shortend it and re-welded the correct reinforced perch mounts on it for a B-body. He also had them install their main caps as those are a weak link on the stocker. He spent around $1000 for the housing work and the Mark Williams aftermarket axles with the bearings. Not too bad if you ask me. I think almost any Dodge Truck Dana 60 will work.

Dart, you said full floater style ends were welded on? Did the axles have a flange? Full floater axles are splined on both ends and do not have a flange. There were a few Pro Stock car built in the '70s that ran this set up but normally it is used on Top Fuel/ Funny Cars.

Wait....check that.

They put the car style flanges on the ends of the housing that are set up like the 8 3/4. Sorry for any confusion.
