Cool

I was wondering if any one knows of any performance items i can get for my 2.5l 88 daytona non turbo. im looking for something that is pollution legal but has good horsepower and torque gain up to atleast 3500RPM. also if anyone can tell me can i put a tubo (exhaust driven of centrifugal belt driven) on my 2.5l with out any computer mods? This is a TBI daytona. If anyone has any ideas i would appreciate it.

P.S. Im looking for low cost mods right now

from what ive found out personally so far the answer to your questions are no.turbo upgrade requires computer replacement for proper fuel management and timing retard/advancing and cam/headwork probably would not help below 2500 rpm as you inquired about.Ive got the same engine and have researched alot here lately. Were better off finding complete turbo engines and swapping them out including computers and accessories.Adding a turbo on your present engine requires a lower compression ratio than you have currently, so its not economically feasable to modify this engine unless you have a donor turbo engine at hand to work with.Good luck

There are two things that you can do for free, and one that is quite cheap. one, remove the air intake preheater, I am not sure if this is supposed to help emissions or not, I really don't think so. The best way to do this is, unhook the vacum control over by the throttle body, or probably in your case carb. Two, the air hose that goes to the cat can be unhooked from the air box, I see no reason why the cat needs air that goes through the intake system. Three, I put a muffler from a 93 V6 shadow on my 92 shadow with a 2.5, that helped higher end power, and the first two things helped low end toque. I am not sure how much power I got, I did each thing by itself and I noticed a difference with each modification. you can also play around with the timeing, after this the changes it might be better at a slightly different setting, I wouldn't change it more than 3 degrees. hope this helps, and you are able to apply this to your 2.5. let me know how it works. You can also have the cylinder head milled to increase compression but you better be sure your piston rings can handle it and you have proper valve clearance.

If you have over 100K mile though milling might not be in your best interest unless you do a full rebuild with new rings.

As for valve clearance, the pistons are dished deep enough to avoid collision but just make sure by putting some clay on the piston and then rotating the motor.

My 89 Daytona has over 120K miles so I only had the head milled .005" to make sure the surface was flat. If I do a rebuild I'll get rid of the balance shafts (If it's possible) and mill the heads some more.

I'm really looking to get 35 mpg and not go for power, but increased compression and less rotating mass is good for power and economy. I'll leave the high horsepower part to my Firehawk instead.

Good luck,
Rob.

Freeing up the exhaust helps a bunch. If your car has a mid system resonator like mine, cut off the pipe behind it and run a 2.25 inch pipe out the side or out the back if you prefer.I eliminated the rear muffler all together.Low and midrange torque improved as well as fuel mileage,if you can take the extra exhaust note.I may install a turbo muff or a resonated exhaust tip in the future.
