Bigger rear tires on '68 Barracuda
I need more meat on the rear of my '68 Barracuda convertible. I have stock 14X5.5 Rallyes with 195/70-14s. I want to bump the rears to 15X7s with 235/60-15 BFG Radial T/As. My Mopar engine builder and I have determined I will need custom backspacing (3 1/4") with the current spring mounting setup (my little Rallyes have a 3 3/4 backspace now). Wheel Vintiques and Stockton have both said they can build Rallyes to these specs, but the wheels must be reversed to get this backspacing. Has anyone done anything like this? How do Rallyes look reversed? What about trim rings (the Stockton guy said they'd fit but look funny; the Wheel Vintiques guy said they would not fit)? Will I have to go without trim rings? I'm planning on leaving the current wheels up front with 195/70-14 BFG Radial T/As (to match the rears with white letters). They now have trim rings, of course, and have been scratched by them. Thanks in advance for any help!

That company has poor quality control. I have a friend that bought wheels from them and had to a bear of a time balancing them, They were out a round. (lots of runout) I would find a origanal set or but others......but not from Vintage wheels or what ever. Crager SS or Torque Thrusts look cool. Thought I would let you know.

Under my 1968 barracuda notchback, I went with American Racing TOrque thrust D 2's. they are a 17 inch wheel, letting you get a wider tire, but being a skinny side wall tire, also improving handling, o yea, they are also a VERY good looking wheel/ tire combo. here are the specs.
front- 245's back 255's Ecsta Supra Touring tires. I might be able to get you a good price on these, lmk |

The reversed wheels look more than just odd, they look like something is wrong with them. If you want a near stock look, don't use them. The backspace you need depends on if you are going to use the stock A body axle or a 4 1/2" BP conversion axle. The stock axle is 1/4" less between the housing flange and the axle flange. If you use the stock axle with custom 4" BP wheels, backspace of 3 3/4" should work with 235/60X15 tires. Maybe these can be made without reversing.

Hey 440barracuda,
I sure would be interested in the backspacing that you used to get those 17s under there, sooner or later I plan on jumping up in size utilizing the availible technology... currently running 255/60r15s(rear) on mine 215/60r15 on the front. I really like the fit I've managed, (they tuck under the sheetmetal perfectly) but would be happy to hear the specs used to fit those 17s. |

The backspacing is about 5 1/2, we had them tailord for our setup, the best way to make sure it is perfect!
