Main cap swap
How's it going people? OK, here's the skinny. I am building a 750 hp monster 440. I'm using a lot of expensive parts and will be road racing this beast in the future. Right now I am using the stock main caps with ARP studs so the bottom end won't explode. Should I trash the stock mains and go with the steel billet caps we all see in the local Summit mags? I'm just getting started and any advice would be appreciated.
The block is an original 68 440, honed, skimmed, magnafluxed you name it. The crank is also the original forged piece. Compression will be 8.5:1 with the s-charger if that helps. Thanks and once again, I appreciate all of your comments. J-440 |

I thought I saw a deal on using 4 bolt hemi style caps and machining the block for them.
Did anyone else see this? Or was there too many beers in me that night? |

The main caps isn't the weakest point, it's the main webbing in the block. Billet caps will not help it, they'll make it worse since they are harder and it will also hit the block harder. There has not been very good results in converting the wedge blocks to a cross bolted style; the mod is expensive and the block is still weak. the only way they have been able to avoid block problems in the longer run with a lots of power is using aluminum main caps. I don't know if that works in an endurance engine though. Your best bet power and reliability wise would be going with a MP cross bolted block.
