tranny options for 440
let me start from the beginning......
i own a 94 dakota, 318, 4 spd auto. nice little truck, but the tranny's gone out twice, and the oil pressure has taken quite a few nose dives out of the blue. so i'm praying for miracles, but searching for shortblocks. this truck sees some towing, and since i'm swapping stuff in and out anyway, i'd just as soon use a 440 out of a motor home, keep the compression low, and not have to rev it up too much. so basically a stock early-70's 440 sounds pretty good to me. i've found Schumacher on the web, so if my fabrication skills crap out on me, i can always get some mounts. so that just leaves the tranny. being mostly a GM guy (i know, i know)i don't know much about parts availability for mopar big blocks. i've gathered that i can't use a small block trans, but i'm wondering if there's an adapter available for my 4spd Auto. barring that, would a 727 from a motor home fit under a pickup like mine? or will i need a car trans? i also have a muncie laying around, dunno if i can use that on a mopar bellhousing or not, though. what are my options for manual trannies? i've seen the Kiesler website, but i don't think i want to spend that kind of money on this truck. are mopar 4 spds hard to find? sorry for the length. any info appreciated. |

The least expensive would be to use a 727 trans for a big block (the bellhousing is different than the small block 727.)
There is adaptors to connect up the small block transmission, or ecen a GM trans, but the adaptors can get expensive (around $500.) For a standard trans you could use an 833, but you need a flywheel, clutch, clutch linkage, big block bellhousing and shifter with linkage. |

Get the 727 Big Block tranny. It wont fail like the OD 4 speed auto's. I havent seen a 4 speed auto yet worth spit. The stock 727 can take abuse of 5-7 seasons of trans brake launches and super wide tires while dumping 600 horse to the rearend it will be up to the job of towing. I suggest investing in a tranny cooler big as you can get in series with the radiator cooler for long lasting dependabilty. Get a good low stall converter also. Like stock converters out of C body cars. These will help keep temprature down.
The 727 is the toughest automatic trans made.............. The fact not opinion!

cool, cool
thanks for the info! now, with small block adapters available, what, if anything, can i do to make my 4spd auto hold up behind a stock 440? i'd honestly swap in a manual trans before i'd go to a 3spd. and yes, i do know what's involved in that....... i take it dodge never used a muncie or superT10 in it's cars? tim |

if you tried putting a muncie behind a hemi all you would be left with is flying chunks of metal.
about the overdrive auto comment, i digress. i run the overdrive in my satellite and it has run a fastest pass of 11.13@119mph. all i have is a deep pan and the mopar shift kit. the overdrive itself however did fail on me after the tenth time i accidentally hit o/d going into high gear on the race track, however the rest of the transmission has had no problems. but if you have a a-500 (the lighter duty version of the o/d trans) than you can kiss it goodbye as soon as you run any kind of 440 through it. i doubt that kevlar bands and the like would be in your budget for this truck. |

yes you can fit a 4spd manual (A833) behind that 440 in that dakota. but it may take some modification to the fire wall.
I put a 318 A833 in an 89 dakota (no room for big blocks there) and I had to so some changes to the firewall via my BFH (big %#$@ hammer) We are using a stock dakota clutch master cylinder, a centerforce diafram style clutch, and a McLeod Industries hydraulic throwout bearing. The pedal pressure is a little more than the average new car but man is it fast. We used a tranny out of a '64-'69 b-body, 10.5" clutch. It's some work but nothing you can't handle. My only sugestion is to use a Lakewood bellhousing and definately (definately) run the support straps to the bottom of the bellhousing. My buddy broke alot of bolts and cracked 2 stock bellhousings because he wouldn't listen to me. After he bent the scatter shield he decided I was right. If you want to run an automatic you can get a A-518 to stand up behind a big block. Have it rebuilt with heavy duty parts and a shift kit and put the biggest tranny cooler you can get on it and you shouldn't have a problem. |
