Default Vapor seperator lines wont stop leaking

71 Satellite, four lines coming out of tank to vapor seperator, the rear most line out of the tank is the worst, but put new clamps on all of them and they still leak while car is not even running. The return line that runs parallel w/line to pump isn just pluged off w/ bolt in line. Its always been plugged off since Ive had the car.

Go get a vented gas cap or take yours off the car and drill a small hole in the center of it all the way through. It is building pressure up somewhere.

If I choose to drill a hole, how safe is that ? Is it normal to hear a sound similar to opening a 2-liter , when ever I release the gas cap ?

Well, most will still make a swoosh sound on the sealed systems. (emissions crap) I ddont know how you could be getting pressure build up if your return line has always been plugged other than due to temp changes.

Give you an example. I emptied a water bottle and sealed the cap on it and carried out side to the car Sat. morning as I was going home from work. 73 in side 11 outside. The bottle started to collapse until the top started leaking air and it finaly poped back out.
Your take has to be vented. Either to the atmosphere (all older cars have this hole some where on the cap by the way ) or to the canister purge like most do today. If not the tank can exspand and contract just like the bottle did. It can make some carbs flood too.

O.K DWC, I replaced the line that was weeping the most and put a new clamp on it. Drilled a hole straight through and this slowed the leak but it's still there. It is leaking between the hose clamp and the tank which is about 1/4" of space. My old man said the nozzle or what ever it's called might have a small crack where it joins the tank ? This sucks !

It could be cracked, but with a good light I would think that it could be spotted. I'd try a little larger hole in that cap since it did help some. What size did you start with??

Dont remember the size, was really small in the fractional tray. Checked the car after work and no leak. Maybe fuel level is a little lower now but will re check after next fill up. [soon]

OK. filled up again today and leaking once again. I really would like to remove this damn vapor seperator since it's not even being used. Can I remove it, plug off the 4 spout's on the tank and just use my cap as a vent ? Am a little worried about getting vapor lock in the future, or is that not likely since it's never happened yet ?

Yes, plug all lines on the tank and disguard the canister and other lines. Make sure hole in cap is big enough or just go buy a new vented cap. Also look above the tank for leaks that might run down if it only leaks when full. Tanks are known to rust through on top and leak.
