727 Converter detection
Please can someone help me!
I just tore down my forged-crank 340 (blown head gasket). With the engine out of the car, I happened to see 2 extra metal slugs on the converter. A friend of mine just told me I have a 360 converter! See image. Thanks. |

Is that a factory converter?
What year 340 is it? Its not uncommon to find balance weights on converters (after market ones common) Even nuetral balanced or internal balanced converters need to be balanced some way. I can see why that they thought that it may be a 360 converter. I look at mine and the weights are in the same place but much smaller. I bet that the tranny come fro a late model 340 which does have external balancing, and extra weight is added to the converter. I dont think its a 360 converter though.

The weights pictured look like the cast crank small weights used on the late '72 and all '73 340's.
Their location on either side of the drain plug is consistent with offset weights, the production balance weights are usually made of thin sheet metal and are attached to the outer periphery of the converter shell. |
