Default Viscous fans?

Can you tell if a viscous fan is working with it off the car? I pulled the spring from the notch and turned it but in either position the tension seemed the same.

Hey, the best way to tell if the fan is working properly is when the engine is fully warmed up. The hot air that is drawn across the fan clutch from the radiator makes the fan turn at pretty close to engine speed. So when the engine is warm, shut it off and try to turn the fan by hand. It should be stiff to turn. If it rotates freely it is bad.
