History of the HEMI
I'm new to the MOPAR scene. [Last one was in 68]I am in the process of ridding the shop of my turbo BUICKS and their related parts, and building a real, vintage street machine for weekend fun!
I have acess to a couple MOPAR rollers, a 65 Dodge Coronet 2dr, and a 68 Dart. Both are in need of serious resto work.. something I can do myself. My questions are: 1. When was the first late HEMI available in a street car? 2. What bodies were they in? 3. Was the alum head race type HEMI ever sold off the dlr showroom? If so, what yr[s]? 4. Anyone have experience[s] to share on the crate HEMI?? [good or bad.] Now that the questions are posed, where can I get a definitive reference manual[s] for this type of info?? I don't mind buying the books to help my education along!! The current thinking is along these lines... 64-65 B body 2 dr. Alum headed HEMI w/ a T'flite and a Dana. Other items as I can find them, such as the van seats, delete plates, etc. This is strictly a street type vehicle and may see occasional track visits.. Any/all input is appreciated!!! Thanks for your time. |

The info your looking for can be found in a book for sure. Just which one I can't remember. MoPar mags write about this stuff enuff that I can pull some info out of my head. Lets see;
I think The 426 was let lose to the public in '66 I think The HEMI was in Darts, Barracudas, Chargers. As well as a few others. Basicly, A & B bodied cars. It is possible to find a C body car with one too. I do know that the Alum. head version was not set out for the public to purchase. Sorry, no HEMI create engine exp. here. |

I'm not an expert on this, but I'll try.
1964: Iron heads, Aluminum cross ram, aluminum fendered B cars 1965: Alum. heads, Magnesium cross ram, acid dipped steel fendered B body. 1966: Street hemi; iron heads, inline 2 4 bbl B body 1967: Same as '66 w/some race only cars built B body 1968: race engine with iron heads & magnesium cross ram in A bodies (Cuda & Dart) limited production not street legal. Street hemi in B body 1969: No race hemi. Street hemi in B body. 1970: Street hemi only. B body and E body (Cuda & Challenger) 1971: Same as 1970 There were NASCAR single 4 bbl engines in 1964 & maybe '65. I believe this is correct, but I have a friend who knows this stuff to the nth degree and if I'm wrong he'll be ashamed of me. |

Call up year one tell them you want a B/E Body catalog. They have some good info and pics. Its free also. Buy a Mopar engine manual. Now I think each engine family has is own book. I have a old one that has them all stuffed in one. Subscribe to the Mopar mags like Mopar Muscle and Mopar Action, There filled with tech and history stuff.
Welcome Aboard!
