None of the factory wedge blocks are strong enough the take 800HP. 650 to 700 on the 440 and 750 with the early 400 block and then you had better be using the aluminum main caps or convert to four bolt cross bolt set up. Both of the above mods are bandaids that may or may not work. At these HP levels you stand a very good chance of main web failure. With the mopar mega block available, there is no reason to use a factory block with serious HP goals.

Dont waste your money on the late 70's 440 engine. I was not aware that they made a 77 HP 440 steel crank engine. The police cars I have seen was all small blocks.

Default I agree

Some time in the 70's, can't remember the year, chrysler started to built them "cheaper." The water jackets were smaller, things like that. Just go ahead and get a new block. I think that in the long run you will be much better off.

I am planning an engine very similar to yours (800-900 hp), I had a good 69 police interceptor block but upon further review decided the best route to take would be the megablock. I also decided to go ahead and do a hemi instead of a wedge because If you shop around there is only about $1500 dollars difference between a wedge and a hemi motor if you are going to buy a megablock anyway. I am 21, unmarried and figure if I am ever going to build a hemi I'd better do it now. But wedges are awsome to.
