Default Best ignition box?

What's your opinion?

My only criteria is the box has to have a "points" lead or connection.

Accel 300+?
MSD 6AL?
MSD 7AL?

It's a STREET car, not a track only car. It has to have some sort of longevity. I've also been told that MSD has a "digital" ignition box....? Or a Crane..???? Or.......?

Mallory is making a new box that seems to have a lot of features. I'm also curious about longevity of these types of boxes for the street on long trips.

I've been using the MSD 6A for two years now on my daily driver and not had any issues. Always heard that MSD is a great deal , at least on street cars. On the other hand many will say that Mopars box is just as good.

The new digital boxes are supposed to be more durable than the analogs. The rev controls are built in, no more chips. My next buy will be a MSD Digital-6 or a Crane HI-6. Right now the Crane is $200 and comes with a free $60 LX-92 coil. The MSD Digital-6 is $280 and the recomended Blaster HVC coil is $110. The standard MSD-6AL with Blaster coil totals $220-$240.

I'm thinking the same way Cecil....

An MSD digital-6 plus with a Blaster HVC coil, I have a couple questions into the MSD "tech line"- compatability issues mostly.

I am running the MSD 6AL and blaster 11 coil from Mopar and the MSD billet dist from Kragens on a 340 Duster. The MSD is superior in all aspects over the standard Mopar with Chrome ECU.and another plus is no damn ballast resistor. MSD has a new ready to run billet dist P\N 8388 for small blocks, was quoted a price of over $500.00 from Kragens today. The total cost of the new dist and digital box is really exciting wonder if the performance gains are worth it for a street driven machine?

I have heard bad things about msd's customer service, like nonexistant. Still a good box, or they would not be selling so many for so long, but if you have a problem.....

I run the mp electronic conversion kit with the orange box and have had no issues, although I am contemplating a change. I asked around and was told that the mallory hyfire VII A or the VII-AL is as good and maybe bit better than the msd. but I am not eager to drop almost two large to find out for myself.

Can you run the "super gold" ecu on the street? I have one and read in an old high performance mopar (old like early 90's) that you could run the super gold on the street if you made a bracket to allow air to move around it to keep it cool....any takers?

Smile msd 7al

Okay so if I was to purchase 7al, I would not need ballast resistor or chrome box for my electronic distributor? This is for race only car and i would be upgrading the distributor at a later date. Also what coil is good for 7al and race only, all for 440, thanks Tim

Marc...
Getting me to change from MSD to Crane HI-6 was like trying to make a cat come on command.

When we ran all the dirt cars we would pull all the MSD's out every year and ship them Via truck (too heavy for UPS) back to MSD and have them all checked, they were pretty good about getting them back but their customer service or helpline wasn't much good them and I don't think it's improved any.

We had very few problems with them and until we got a distributor machine and a buzz box and could see for ourselves what was really happening inside the box at various RPM we had no complaints.

A friend of mine who works for Crane sent me a HI-6 box to test and try out, we buzzed it up and it was comparable to the MSD, the difference that swayed me was the accessoy line, 3 stage studder box adjustability and accuracy.

I have had no problems with the HI-6 in 2 years....not only that but the black box looks cool.

I have been running the MSD 6AL for about 5 years and it works great. I run it with the crane PS91 ignition coil and Jacobs plug wires.
My Coronet may get a Crane HI-6 box to try, mainly because it is less expensive.

With any of these boxes make sure they have a very good ground connection or they can burn out.

Well, the box I am looking at is the MSD digital-6 plus, NOT the 6AL, and is entirely different.
The digital-6 is kind of new, and there doesn't seem to be an enormous amount of user knowledge available yet, but from what I've seen, it's the box for me.
I think...???

Anybody have experience or comments about Jacobs Ignitions. I have used their plug wires on my 94 G/A and read their book. The wires work fine and the book was pretty informative.

I ran a Jacobs Pro-8 on my duster (360, 9:1, 284/484 purple shaft, ported J heads, torker intake, 1 5/8" headers, carter 750 comp carb) for 10 years. I can remember when I put it on, I had been running an orange box mopar ignition and it made a huge difference. It would idle at 750 rpm (lumpy but stable), I picked up almost 2 tenths in the 1/4 and the gas mileage became tolerable, or as tolerable as it gets with 3.91 gears. Burnouts were much more impressive too. The only con I see with Jacobs is the price. Great stuff, but pricey.

Default I have the Pro Street

The Jacob's made a big difference in drivability and the sound is much . . . 'crisper'. Comes with a new coil, ECU, almost everything you need for about $350. They don't have an adapter for the magnetic pickup and no-one seems to know which lead from the distributor is the positive, or if it even matters. I called Mopar tech and asked which lead into the orange box was + and they said they didn't know and each application is different. Anyway, for now I trigger from the orange box instead of the dist. Easy to bypass if you leave the stock ignition in too.
