Hi, I am converting my 1967 Barracuda to 4.5" bp. I have a 8 3/4" 3.23 A-body diff and 1973 Valiant front disc brakes. I wanted to know if there was anyone who had installed aftermarket wheels on their cars with a similar set-up. I was looking at Weld Wheels Pro-Star 14" X 6" fronts and 14" X 7" rear.
There is the question of Backspacing, they are 3 1/2" backspace and I wonder if they will fit. I need to know, since you can't mount them to check. (they cannot be returned that way) American Racing Torq-Thrust and Centerlines also have the same backspacing. Can anyone help? |

The 14x6 MIGHT fit, but I doubt it. All of these little cars (A-bodies) came with a slight positive offset, that is, wheel tucked in towards the center of the car. I think the stock backspace(BS) on a 14x5.5 rallye wheel was 3.75". That means that the wheels you are (were?!?) looking at are shallower to start with and also wider. They'll probably rub on the outer part of the fender. I converted my 69 Valiant to the big pattern and I'm using 15x6.5 wheels from a 77 New Yorker (4.125" BS) with 225/60 tires. It all clears pretty well, but the fronts will rub on the wheel opening if I go up a hill too fast while turning. At the same time, the rears rub a little on the inside in the same situation. I'm living with this because I want to keep the dog dish hubcaps that came on the car... :-) I know that a 15x7 with 4.5" BS fits very well on the front, but will probably rub a little on the back, too. I also have 16x8, 4.5" BS wheels with 245/50 tires that fit well on the rear, rub a little, but are OK. These will NOT fit on the front, though. 5" of BS is the maximum BS you can use with a 16" wheel and might make the front work with a 225/50; 245/50 would still be risky. Lots of choices with the big bolt pattern. Measure twice!
