Default Mo-Par when did it start

It's my understanding that the term "Mopar", came from the abreviation of Motor-Parts. This was done by the chrysler parts division.

My question is... when?

I'm guessing it was in the 30's. Does anyone know?

Thanks for the response JV.

Your response is a little brief, though. Are you saying you know that it's 1937? Where did you get this info?(I'm just interested, not doubting it or anything)

Or, are you saying that 1937 is what you heard, or what?

Sorry for the short reply. I was on my way out the door. I've done some research on it for a paper so that's why I know, but I did a quick search and found this for you. I figured it'd be informative.

Chrysler had a parts department before but it really didn't have a specific name. I tried to find a page with all the logo's on it but I couldn't. I'll look some more tomorrow.

JV is right. Up until 1937, all Chrysler products used a four letter symbol:
DP
CD.
It stood for Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler, DeSoto. Although it was eclipsed by the famous yellow Mopar Parts symbol, the DPCD was used until 1969 on different parts. The top of my Dart's radiator shows it. There is a picture that shows all of the different symbols that Chrysler has used throughout the years and the specific years that each one was used. If you go to your local Chrysler dealer, they should have one. I think I once saw a shirt with the same design on it too.

That was a great question and terrific answers. I've been around a LONG time and I didn't know the answer to that one.
