Default best mufflers?

What are the best mufflers for a big block dodge? Something with a nice tone that won't wake the dead. I have flowmasters right now, but they're way too loud. Thanks

I'm runnin dynomax race magnum's right now. I really like the tone that they put out. Mine are on a small block with headers, never heard em on a big block, but I love'em on mine

Best mufflers are the ones Scott Brown offers. They are not the least expensive, but they are the best . I've got 3" race versions in my car with a 3.5" X pipe. They are way quieter than 2 chamber flowmasters and have a non disturbing sound. http://www.racemufflers.com

Dynomax race magnums/Ultraflows are nice. Good sound and no resonance at cruise rpm. I removed/sold my Flowmasters for them 2 yrs ago. Regularly $59.95 at Summit or Jegs but watch for a $25 per muffler rebate. They've done it the last 2 yrs and they may do it again soon.

IMO, Hooker Aero chamber mufflers. Highest flowing chambered muffler on the market. (441 cfm) A buddy runs them on his big block Buick dynoed @ 550 hp. The 3 inch pipes go from header to bumpper. A most reasonable sound weather at WOT or cruise.
I know you'll like'em.

We had the 3" RPM's in a SB, but they were way too loud and I didn't like the sound. Replaced them with Dynomax Truck Super Turbos and sold them to a friend. He has them now in a slightly biggr SB and with an X-pipe they are a bit quieter and do not make the rap they made without one.

I run dynomax super turbo's on my big block. It has such a low tone to it that it will rattle the pictures on the walls in the house, and that's with the truck in the driveway.

It's alot quieter than the glass packs and straight pipe I had on it earlier. (neighbors don't complain now) and it's not obnoxiously loud but it's definately got a rummble at idle.

Magnaflows are very similar to the Ultra Flows but a little cheaper.
I recommend a H-pipe with any straight through muffler, it really
mellows the tone.

Biggrin

Finally got good weather to take the Duster out for a drive today. I had just installed tailpipes and tips with the Ultraflows. Previously had turndowns at the axle and I couldn't believe the deeper and to me actually more aggressive sound now. It's not louder just a deeper sound. These mufflers are quieter than 2 chamber Flowmasters but still have a distinct aggresive performance sound. Some guys that do alot of cruising might prefer the Super Turbos as they are quieter. My AM/FM radio is almost non-existent.

I'm running 3" 2 chamber delta flow flow masters right now. quiter then the old 2 chambers but still pretty loud. If I change I'll be going to a set of Straight Lines. From what I hear Scott Brown the owner use to work for DynoMaxx. His muffs are a better version of the ultra flow.

man, y'all 'old' guys...hmm...i dunno! i love my glasspacks, and i actually can't wait for the pipes to break off again (old and rusted), or for the packing to blow through. as soon as that happens, i'm strait piping my 340!!

we have 17" glasspacks on my brothers 440 with 2 1/2" pipes all the way back to chrome tips, and it sounds sweet. great rumble at idle, and window rattling at WOT!

hell, when people complain about the noise of mine, i say: "give me a couple hundred dollars and i'll put a quieter exhaust on it, untill then, you might wanna invest in some earplugs!". i love making 1st gear passes on main...

Sound doesn't mean much at all. Back pressure, restrictions and hp lose is what's important when selecting mufflers. Always use a good X or H pipe in your system to balance exhaust pulses and increase low to mid range torque as well.

mine is a true dual system (no crossovers at all), and it sounds great with .542" lift, headers, and a heavy foot! my glasspacks are about 20" or so long though, but they're old.

I have nothing against loud mufflers. I'm just getting tired of F.M.s plus with a little one on the way and a irretable girlfriend, they might enjoy beable to think in the car. Ofcoarse I could always go with open headers and not have to listen to them

1972roadrunner..

My Road Runner exhaust consists of duals exhausts, no cross over, and two glass packs, w/ one minor change..

They are hollowed out.

The setup on there is really old, but they actually sound pretty good, not too loud, but definitely a bit loud. The tone is actually really good too, nice rumble to them.

Of course it is gonna get a new exhaust some time soon (its old and starting to go) but thought you might like that

sounds good to me!

i'm tryin to convince dad to let me order some dump valves for the beast... cowboys around here are irritating sometimes. they have crappy trucks with 350 chibby's, and the exhaust usually consists of catylitic converters only, plus, there aren't any hangers so they hang down real far...sounds BAD! the rumble of mine out does them, but open headers are even better!

I stand with modro and 1972roadrunner. I have cherry bomb glaspakcs and like the sound. I dont like the "classic Flowmaster sound." To me it sounds like something went to shit and started rattling around in the exhaust. My friend runs a 454 with headers and hooker aero chambers. 3" the whole way. I liked it when he first put it on just because it was LOUD. It was twice as loud as my truck. But know they melowed out and just get annoying when you have to listen to it for 30 minutes on the interstate just so you can hear it rev up when he gets stuck, damn chevys have no decent four wheel drive system. Does anyone know who sells the electric cutouts that the guy used on "Trucks"? That would always be cool, flip the switch at a stop light and blow away any unsuspecting ricers. I dont have to much experience with any other mufflers, so I'm pretty much out of comments.

Modro: how do you hollow out glasspacks? Cut them open, pull everything out and weld it pack up?
