904 or 727??
alright.. The shop I work at is starting to work on a "shop car" Something to show off our talents, and have fun with. Unfortunatly, it's not going to be a Hemi RR or anything like that. It's a 1980 Mazda RX7. The deal is, we are taking out the 70ci Rotary, and putting in a decent 318, that will end up with some boost. just looking to make 350-400 rwhp. The car is being put together on the CHEAP, but have good performance. The rx7 has great handling stock, and great brakes too, but really lacks in the power department. Weighing in at only 2400 pounds with driver, its very easy to get some good performance on something that light. Would the 904 (junkyard) handle this much, or would it be a safer bet to go with the 727. I'm sort of looking at the benefits of lighter internals of the 904, and smaller dimensions. I wouldn't trust a 904 in my cuda, making that sort of power, but at 1,000 pounds lighter, I'm thinking it will work just fine.

The you mention blower for the 318 while the 904 will handle it and probably run better due to its lower first gear. I would go with the 727 tranny. A properly tuned 904 will be great, and run better too also.........tough one.

a good 904 will hold up to any 400 hp smallblock. that is the popular trnny around here and have seen it hold together in bottom 10 second cudas and darts.

I use a 904 in my Duster. Remember the lighter the car the less stress on the drivetrain so a 904 will do fine, will fit better plus it's lighter. By the way John Baughman (sp?) of SS Hemi Dart fame says the 904 was good in his car to 850 HP. After that it just didn't last. The only weak point I've had is the small converter snout.

I know you can build a stout 904, but i'm going to be taking the cheap junkyard transmission route. completely stock, and might get a shift kit, but thats the extent of things. I suppose there is only one way to really find out.

I don't have any aftermarket parts in mine except the converter and the valvebody. I used a 5 disc front clutch and 4 disc rear clutch and that is it.
