Help 318 heads

318 build ups are all the rage right now.

my 3rd is as follows:

.030" over Keith Black pistons (9.0:1), balanced lower assembly (pistons, rods and crank), edelbrock performer intake, 1 5/8" headers. the rear gear is 3.55 cam (right now) is the edelbrock performer cam...i know its not popular choice on this board, but its what i have (204/204 duration .472/.488), 1.5 roller rockers

well here's the catch....i have too many choices in heads. i would like your thoughts on the following:

1. -675 heads: ported, undecked 1.78/1.5 valves

2. -302 heads: ported, decked .020 1.78/1.5 valves

3. smogger 360 heads, not yet prepped for use on 318, but could be

4. 63cc edelbrock heads...new

it'll be used in a Dakota as a daily driver, but would like some spunk....thoughts?

Go with the Edekbrock heads, and run around 10:1 compression. They can handle pump gas (high test). Then second choice run the 360 heads. The stock valves will be fine, the 2.02 intake will require notching the block for valve clearance. The stock valves of the 360 will be planty if you sue them, open up the bowl areas to the seat. But thats if you dont run the Eddy heads, which will require blok clearance also. (RUN THE EDDY HEADS)

For the cam and intake you are going to run, I would say the Eddy and 360 heads are too big, and will kill the bottom end and economy. Both have about 172cc intake ports and can make 500+horsepower with the right combo. You are probably only looking at 300hp realistically, so the 302's would be the best choice, with their 125cc inltake ports. Put in 1.88/1.60 valves and do enough porting to flow 180/200 cfm and you will be in great shape. The 302's with the performer will give you good wide torque and good economy when compared to the 360 or Eddy heads. Even the Edelbrock catalog says to use the smallest ports you can get by with, and you sure don't need heads that will flow 250 cfm.

Dont need 250 cfm. HA HA HA. Well you could be right. If they flow that much You wont really have to much low end. I guess that in a dak the you could get by with more flow than you could in a heavier vehicle. My vote goes for the 302s. They are less expensive and cheaper if you know how to port. I am planning on some for my truck. 360s could probably work but will require some work for the compression. Edelbrocks are alluminum and thats a plus. I dont know what they flow but from what I here its about as much as a really well ported set of stock heads. But the cost for the heads alone could pay for a good set of 302's. If you already have the cam use it. I have plugged the performer cam into the dyno 2000 program and got pretty good results. That profile is even one that the computer picked out of a total of well over a thousand with similar lift and duration.

Default terrible news

while getting set to port the 2nd -302 head i found the infamous across valve seats crack. <sigh> of course it would have to be AFTER i finished one head that i would think to closely inspect the the 2nd. duh. so i am going with the -675s, just gonna' do some more porting and milling.

the eddys are destined to stay on a 360. oh well.

should still see 300HP with what i have around the house.

hey, moparman318, i see you have the same set up as i do in your ram. i take it you like the results?

I think it runs ok. It would run alot better if I tuned the carb. I also need to set it up to run of road. On a little side hill or grade it will flood out bad, got to keep it to the floor and in low range half the time. I think the manifold was the most productive thing I did to it. Stopped it from backfiring and guzzeling so much gas. I noticed a slight change with the cam but not what I was expecting. BIggest change was that it started to overheat right after the cam swap. I have no clue why. But be warned when I jet the carb and swap some 302 heads in there, gasket matched and all, it'll run like a champ.
