8 3/4 Housing ?'s
Which housing for 8 3/4 rears is the best? Also how do you find out what housing you have?

Are you wanting to know about the housing or the carrier??? The housing is what the axle shafts and the carrier go into. The carrier is what the ring & pinion are in.
The last 3 digits of the casting number are the id of the carrier. The 489 is supposed to be the best, however I (and many others) prefer the 742. |

Depending on your intended application, it's really a toss up between the 742 or 489. The 741 is the "weakest" of the bunch, but is still plenty stout for most applications until you hit stratospheric HP/Torque levels.
