Default surging problems

What I have is a 72' dodge Charger. Recently I noticed that the car was stalling and surging, so I put a new fuel filter and cleaned all of the plugs. It did run fine after that until the next day. I did have to shove the clip back into a couple wires though. It does have points ign., new Edel. 600# carb, and dual plane intake. Could it be the wires and plugs? I noticed to day that some plugs had alittle oil on them and it was popping in the headers when I was driving.

Sounds like shes misfiring to me. Buy a good set of wires, cap and rotor and plugs to begin with. Do yourself a longterm favour and go get an electronic ignition (distributor, control module and wiring) from a scrapyard and get busy. The conversion is not hard and will help immensly.

thats what I figured it was. I do have a complete elec. wiring harness and distributor. But need a rally dash to hook up to it. But since im building my other 72' I probally wont switch this one over. Depends on what I feel like.

why get one from a junkyard? just get a MP Electronic ign conversion kit. comes with module, wiring, dist, and it's all new. detailed instructions are also included.

converted my bro's '71 440 to electronic in about an hour (had to take lunch break), and it REALLY helped.

Make sure it isn't a bad fuel pump, or stuck float needle before you go hunting around the ignition. Surging is usually a lean fuel problem, either air leak or poor flow.

I agree with Mtrv8n!
I dont think its in the igntion surging is probably due to the carb. Go to the junk yard a pickup a 25$ distributor and run the wires yourself, and save 150$. I have seen no advantages of running a new MP distributor kit as far as power goes. There the same distriburors as some factory cars had. They still have the heavy weight spring on one side. They say that its got a performance advance curve and all......Bull Butter, if you ever taking one apart you know that the advance curve cannot be no diff than the factory. Same type centrifugal advance cam plats. They just swap the springs for quicker action. And there out of Phase just as the stock ones are too. All Im saying is that they say your getting a speical distributor, and really your not.

I'm with 6Packin all the way here....we do 3-5 a week and they're all out of phase.
On our Stage 2 distributors we weld the advance plate and slots, then mill out the slots to get 34 total. We then set the advance curve with various springs to match your exact combo of carb, weight, gear, tire size, convertor, shift RPM...etc.

This keeps you out of detonation range and gives you the advance curve to make the most power when you need it and still give you easy starting.

If you haven't had your distributor reworked your missing out on a bunch of HP, just a simple recurve won't cut it on a performance application, you need the full meal deal....$99.00 cheapest HP you'll ever buy.

I found out the other day that it was two spark plug wire causing it. They both were fried petty good behind the silicone, but enough to mke spark when you pull the plug to chck for spark. As for the distributor, I do have one that has been all rebuilt that I would use with my elec. harness, but wondering how I could hook it up with out the harness? I do have everything to convert over though.

cuda66273, What's the normal turnaround time on your Stage 2 distributor rework job once you receive the distributor?
