Help Comp XE274he cam too much for my 340?

Hi all, Will the Comp cams XE274HE (230/236-.488/.491- 110) be too much for my 8.6 compression 340? Should i go down to the XE268HE? This is in my '69 Dart. Manual brakes and steering. Below are the specs. Thanks

Hughes ported "j"heads 2.02/1.60
RPM Air-Gap intake
Holley 750 Vac sec.
TTI 1-5/8-1-3/4 step headers ceramic, 2-1/2" exhaust
727 trans (stock 340 conv. for now) will change if needed to match cam.
8-3/4 Sure-grip w 3.91 gears

I ran that cam in a 360 I built a few years ago. It had close to 10:1 CMP also. The cam needs adjustable valve train really. Or they will make some noise to be sure. I would say that with your compression that low. With that cam in there the car would be a pig of the line. You need to raise the CMP up at least a full point if not higher for that cam. You need somthing with less over lap, so it wont bleed of the compression even more. Throttle responce will not be good. Yes I would bump down to the next grind and still try to bump compression up too. You combo sounds great, go for a 3,000 high stall converter, like a Dynamic, Coan, or Fairbanks.

I don't know about the cam, but what do you think about your heads? Did you trade them for cores or have Hughes do your original heads? Did they do a good job, give noticeable improvement in torque?

The heads were on the engine when i bought it so i have no comparison. The ports look great, I have no doubts that they are much better than stock heads.

I'm with 6 packin on this one. The cam can stay if ya bump the comp. up a point. If milling the head is out, the small cam will do better in terms of torque and All around.

Thanks, It's looking like the XE268HE will be the one I run. Thanks for the input.

hi, i'll go along with tha others. you need to raise that c.r.
that cam should work fine.
i've got comps 284/294 [240-246@.050] cam in my 366 demon.

it's pretty radical sounding, but it seems to make great power.
