Default carter 650 advice please

my new( used) carb is too rich i think. last night i floored it in the merge lane, and when i looked in my mirror the car behind my was in a huge cloud of smoke. i know its not oil. any one know a metring rod\jet combo that would put me in the ball bark with a 273?

it idles fine and the response is crisp, but i don't like the idea of all that fuel washing my cylinders

I know my 273 used to run a 500 cfm. I don't know about metering rods or jets, but I've been told that a 650 is good for my 340... you might want to check out smaller CFM carbs. They have em on Ebay here It'd be the first place I looked.

Hey Brent;

Whatcha got there is a Carter 625 emmisiions carb. Nothing different about it then from the 600 CFM unit they sell. The 25 added cfm is just for a ref to emmisions.
Tuning a AFB is easy. If you never tuned one before, just pick up a strip kit. It was designed for the strip. It contains rod, jets and a few neddle and seats.
From here you can move onto larger rods until you run better. If you want a copy of the instructions that came with the carb when new, E-mail me with your address again and I'll send them right out to ya.
Inside, they explain the carb, it's settings and a chart on the rod and jet combonations.
It also has a quick easy read on how to tune them. Also look above at the stickys.
A great little device that I have used myself is the Edelbrock air/fuel ratio gauge/monitor. This can help you tune the carb by sight on how the gauge reads. It acts fast only needing the engine to be warm. (Sensor should be warm and placed as close to the exhaust manifold outlet or in the header collector.)

That smoke could have been years of soot that you blew out when you hammered it.

the spark plugs are gray, which is different from when i had the edelbrock 2bbl on it. they were orange, i'm assuming from the 92 octane unleaded. the plugs are autolite 65's

Orange is usally from additives i think.
Billy has a point as well.
Also, ya, you should be able to pick both up in the same place.
Carter makes the strip kit, Edelbrock has there version too.

Starting point:

Metering rod 76-47
Jet 92
Spring yellow
Float w/ gasket at .430
(I have a BG jet driver that measures .430 and I use it as a guage)

Most of the rich conditions I find on Used Eddy's is the owners put a big spring in them.....Duh..bigger is better right? On a big cam motor the spring over powers the vacuum and holds the metering rods open and dumps fuel constantly.

I tune these things once in awhile...2 yesterday.....I'll spend about an hour on them ..then in the trash can they're not worth spending the time on....I allow a $25.00 trade in on a Demon, set the floats, new N/S, top gasket, blow them out and then flog them on Ebay to the Chevy Guy's, first bid over $65.00 "SOLD!"

Check and see what you've got compared to this set up, take 2 beers and call me in morning.

Ya, you got a point on that water stuff in there!

I'll be on the phone when I get home, about 4 pm, also want to know where I can get one of those good covers. I haven't called the auto parts places yet.
