Default How do you clean spark plugs?

How do you clean spark plugs if you do not have a bead blast cabinet or one of those little JC Whitney things?

with your wallet..buy new ones..
You'll only ruin a plug by trying to clean it with abrasives.

If you wire brush them and take a propane torch to them (get them hot), it might give the plugs some more life.

I would never clean the ones on my car but for my old 2 stroke motorcycle I use some spray ovencleaner and let it soak for a while then bend the electrode out some and wire brush the end, blow it out with some air, regap it and it would run as good as a new one.

If you have a problem with a plug or plugs fouling you need to address the problem. Plugs are cheap and should last a long time( be useable) except in race type applications.

But you can clean them with a torch, wire brush, and air psi in a pinch.

If you have a plug fouling you can also make a spark gap between the plug wire and the plug, not hi-pro just lo-tec

At a $1 each, you would have to be very hard up for bucks to mess with cleaning plugs.

Like the man says, fix the problem. On a well tuned engine you shouldn't have to replace the plugs more than once every 20,000 miles. On a modern engine with EFI they'll go 40,000 or more. I think the plugs in my Lexus were changed at 60,000 miles!

Another good way is to take it out on a long stretch of road or uphill grade and mash the loud pedal for a few seconds! But seriously, find the problem, fix it, change plugs every 2 or 3 years like everyone else...........djs
