Most likely a '64-'67 motor. The casting date will tell exactly what year. If original crank is in it, it will have the small flywheel register.

So how can I find out exactly what year it is, I need to take the 30 year old distributor out that is for a 175ci motor and put a new one in the 225. We bought it new, but only have old dist. in it.

Look for the casting date. On a 2806830 casting # block, the casting date is just to the right of the casting #, just past half way back. Yours amy be the same place. The block I just looked at was cast 04118, or 4-11-68, the car the motor is in was built on 5-09-68. I'm not sure what your asking, all distributors interchange on slants. You should upgrade to a newer electronic dist anyway and ditch the points dist.

The reason Im asking , is we had a 175ci motor and bought a rebuilt 225ci. The performance is not very good and we have to advance the dist. all the way and it dosent seem to be the right one, we put a pertronix in the dist so we dont want to spend the $ on a conversion kit. The dist curve is also diffrent between the two diffrent motors.

OK, I see now. Sounds like the dist is installed a tooth off. You say it's advanced all the way and still down on power, by that you mean the dist won't turn anymore? If so, pull dist out till the gear doesn't engage anymore (about 2-3"). Turn rotor counter clockwise to the next tooth (about 25-30 degrees). Reinstall dist and make sure the rotor now is pointed in a clockwise location than where it started. Now you may have to retard the dist a little. There is a plate on most dist that limits how far you can turn it. It too can be adjusted but is not as easy as the above method. It may take both methods to get it right but try moving the rotor position first.
If that helps and you like the advance curve in the old dist better, take both apart and swap springs and the slotted advance arm.
