Default Change rear main seal or not

Does it do any good to change the rear main seal with the crank still in? I have'nt had much luck in the past ( as in 25 years ago) Its not much of a leak, but thought while I have the pan off anyway........... Maybe seals are better now? By the way its a 340!

small block rear mains can be changed with the crank in the engine, at least, the lower part.
they are a two piece deal

i just recently changed the rear main in my 360 without removing the crankshaft

I have changed them before with good luck. Just drop the rear main, cut a section of the old lower half (main cap seal part) and us it to drive the top half out. Oil the new seal well, with fresh oil or 80W gear oil so it slides in easy.

Thumbs up

Todays 2 pc rear mains work well, after dropping the rear main cap youll have to drive the upper half of the seal out,I use a piece of welding rod because you can bend it to any shape you need and it soft enough not to scratch the crank,if its stubborn try rotating the crank in the same direction as removal of the seal, when reinstalling the new seal you may need to turn the crank again,be sure to get the lip facing the right direction and lube the crank seal side only, before installing the lower half put a dab of sealant where the the 2 halves contact,I strongly suggest using "The Right Stuff" sealant on the halves and oil pan,its 10 times better than rtv, have fun...............PRO.........
