HELP! Installation prob w/ intake and valve covers...
Installing Performer RPM and Mopar Performance aluminum valve covers on my 340. The valve covers cannot sit all the way down and seat as they strike the intake near the front intake runners. Is this common?
Do I need to grind the intake area or the lip of the valve cover?! You'd think they'd make these things with enuff clearance. And no, I don't think my heads were milled...although I cannot be sure having only owned the 'Cuda for 1 yr. Thanks for any responses. Eric Z Plymouth, Michigan 1972 'Cuda 340 4spd. Black/black |

Yeah - this is a pretty common problem - had the same problem with a set of cast covers & an older Edelbrock intake. From what I've heard so have many others.
The inteference was slight on mine, so a light grinding with the dremel on the intake & a thicker gasket on the valve cover took care of it. I have heard of people having to take intakes into machine shops to get them ground because the amount of material needed to be removed would look hacked if you tried to do it by hand. Just one of them things with aftermarket parts, I guess... |

from what I've heard it is common for those valve cover to hit the intake. Most people grind the lip of the valve cover off so it will fit.

I couldn't install a new distributor on a Victor Jr intake becuase of the casting, had to grind away part of the base of the fitting .
I used a grinder wheel, one of those rocks on a stick things, on my drill, worked fine. |

Just double up on the cork gaskets (RTV them together) and use longer cover bolts or studs. Dont hack up the covers, gaskets are easier!

Thanks VERY much for all the responses. Now I'll decide if I want to grind or double gasket.
Thanks again. Eric Z |

I would grind rather than double gasket. For the simple fact that its really easy to over-tighten the double gaskets and have the damn things spit out the sides. Just get a die grinder and take off what ever you need. It will only take a few minutes, I think I have had to do this on most all my alum covers.

Hmm?
I have a 360 with MP cast valve covers. I have run 2 types of intake on my engine with ZERO clearance problems, ones a old 340 torker, and a stock mid 70's 360 intake. My heads, and block have been milled .020 each. I guess I was lucky.
