Default 4spd w\od vs. 904 in 66 dart

I am in the process of building a 66 dart gt with a 360. I am trying to decide between a 904(which the car has now) or converting to the 4spd. I would like to get decent mileage. The car will have a 3.23 sure grip 8 3/4. which I am getting ready to install. Would mileage be a lot greater with the 4o\d. Will it hold up behind my 300 HP 360. I have the aluminum 833, bellhousing and flywheel alllready. I need to make a decision cause I can sell the manual stuff to fund my swap. Thanks for any help.......... The car is a six now.....

The 4 spd o.d. is an A-833 that has had third gear removed from the shaft and placed where 4 th was, then the o.d. gear went where 3rd was. You can look at the side cover and tell this by the fact that one shift rod mount lever is up and one faces down. It is the same as the A 833 4 spd other than the gears have been changed around to get the ratios desired for o.d. It will easily take 300 hp and then some. It will be only slightly better on mpg than the A 904.

The A 999 police car tranny would be better since it has a lower first gear and a five clutch drum in it. Takes more abuse and will shift slightly faster than the A 727 and is a little lighter too.

If you dont want the manual stuff I have the stuff you need for an auto tranny swap, including the A904,A999,A727 trannies.

I'd go with the auto. easier to install, better streetability, and less of a headache trying to install the clutch linkage if you do ever decide to do headers. Plus the fact you need a 4 speed tunnel and that means new carpet kit and a cut into the cars "backbone" since it is a unibody. Sell the manual stuff and get yourself a good automatic and cable shifter.

Pishta makes a good poimt there. Much less work to install the auto in that small engine bay car anyway. Not too safe to cut the cross member up either if you dont plan on adding sub frame connecters. I'll fix you up on a swap somehow if interested.

Well, nothin reall beats slammin gears on a stick car, but the auto is easier installation, more consistency and all that, if its a race car go the auto.. but if its a street driver, i dont see why the stick wouldnt be considered. Just my 2 cents

As Pishta reminded me you have to cut the driver side frame over the tunnel to clear the shift linkage and it makes the car weak in the middle. If it's not done right I have seen cars that actually sag in the middle. It's very dangerous if invoved in a wreck and the continued flexing will destroy the car and can and will wrinkle the quarter panels.

The car is an auto \6 car now. I have been leaning towards the auto. but I grew up on 4 speeds and sometimes go distances to shows. I would like to keep any gas mileage I can. 92 octane just hit $2.01 a gallon here. I will go with an Auto, I had pretty much decided just wanted to get some more opinions. My 4 spd stuff will be up for sale as of now 360 10 1/2" flywheel new, aluminum case od 833 73 duster pedals, smallblock bell housing for o/d trans., hurst comp plus shifter , a-body bench seat shift handle(hurst) with 4spd ball etc. I am looking for 999 for my 360, convertor, flexplate etc....

I would like to thank everyone for all your help I've had a lot of posts lately and everyone has been very helpful. also searched thru the old stuff ( A LOT!!) This is my second mopar ( i used to build that other cheap brand)

Just a FYI post. The gears are not switched in the A-833 OD just an overdrive third gear replacing the std. third gear. With the lever on the transmission turned over the unit is shifted to 4th (direct) when you move the shift lever to the 3rd position, and when the shift lever is moved to the 4th position the transmission is actually shifted to 3rd (overdrive). Turning the transmission 3rd and 4th operating lever over reverses the 3-4 shift pattern.
