Default Roller rocker clearance?

I'm planning to put roller rockers on my 440. It will have 452 heads and stock steel valve covers. Cam will be .480 lift. My question is will there be enough clearance for the roller rockers inside the stock covers? I put Crane rollers on my 340 with stock covers and they just touched the baffle inside the cover. I had to make some small dimples to fix the problem.

I will tell ya what happened to me. I have the MP 284/.528 solid in my 440 with stock valve covers. It did ok no problems untill I replaced valve cover gaskets do to a leak. Oh yea changed the oil and filter too. Fired it up and had a knock that you could here 25 feet away. Man I was scared (New engine) I pulled the covers fired it up and the knock was gone. Look inside the covers and seen where the rocker tips were contacting the baffle shield. You should be ok with the .480 lift though. But can happen.

If your rockers are aluminum, you will probably not have enough clearance. If they are steel, then they are probably similar sized to stock rockers. I ran into this when putting roller rockers on my 440 recently. I had to go back to my taiwan chrome ones till I can save the 300 bucks for the indy covers I really want. I painted them wrinkle black, so they don't look that bad anymore.....

You can dimple the baffle, remove it or use any of the MP or aftermarket covers without the baffle. Not a big deal any way you look at it.

Default No baffle?

So your saying the baffle is not necessary? Doesn't that keep oil from being splashed into the PCV valve and breather? I'd like to keep the stock covers if I can. Does anyone make an extra thick cover gasket?

How about glueing two gaskets together with rtv? Might become a sealing problem though, and need for new longer bolts for covers.

I've never had a problem not using the baffles.

Default Extra Thick Gaskets

WayneT,

Fel-Pro makes extra thick gaskets for small blocks #1646, I use these quite successfully. You can prolly find some for your big-block too. Check with your local speed shop, or contact Fel-Pro.
Good Luck.
