Puzzling hp #'s
I have a 69 Dart w/360ci.,670 holley,10:1 comp.,Edel. Perf. RPM
272 dur. Crane Powermax(216@.050,rated 2000-5000) w/matching springs Stock rockers,360 heads w/mild porting & 2.02 intake valves Hedman 1 5/8" headers W/ 2 1/4" duals, 3.23 gears. Mopar Perf. Elect. Ign. Kit w/ orange box Timing @ 34 total(any more & it pings) I had it on chassis dyno and it made 262hp@5100 & 317lft@3200 Problem is a big dip in hp & torque beween 4500 &4900 RPM 250 down to 240 then up to 262 within 400RPMs And power drops right off after 5100.(on this point I know this is the limit of the cam but it looks a little dramatic to me) I have 3 theories: Could this be ignition related, cam not big enough or valve train harmonics. Any advice appreciated,thanks. |

I would say, given dyno proven results with an MP 360, you need 36 degrees of timing to get full power. That said, you need better gas to get there.
I run 37 degrees on 93 octane, in a crate 360/380, no pinging at all. You might be a bit lean as well, and the carb is a bit small. Try going up one jet size on the primaries and two on the secondaries. The power dip at a particular RPM is a clue.. Your HP is not bad, considering it's a chassis dyno! |

Did you have the heads flow tested? You may be having a flow problem @ that point for some reason. Just a thought

Those numbers are pretty good givin your cam, which is probably the limiting factor. As for the dip in power I agree with the Mtrv. You could need a jet change. Maybe a bigger squirter, a 50 cc acclerator pump would help. Even though the springs and cam are matched there not much better than new stock springs, maybe 70-80 LBS seat pressure, if that. A bigger cam, and some jetting will help it pull more to your liking. And like they said maybe 4 deg more advance and some good ole barrel fuel will help wake any engine up.
