Help install adj rocker arm

When installing adj rockers on a 400 can you center the push rods and bolt down the shaft? Or what is the correct way to make this conversion?

Have hyd lifters and using this setup due to head milling?

23T...

Besides the adjustable rockers you will need different pushrods. You will need a set of mechanical pushrods instead of your hyd. pushrods...assuming you are usind the Crane/Mopar Performance rockerarms. They use a cup type end to match up the pushrod to the rocker arm.

There are quite a few posts from last summer I believe talking about this very subject.

I have used the Crane/Mopar Performance adjustables on my last two big blocks and I love them. They work great when you use a wild cam, or shave the heads, or deck the block.

Then you can't do it the way I was going to say. You'll have to do it the hard way. And very carefully.

Back all the adjusters out, leave just enough of them out to center the pushrods...Aline them up and slowly tighten the 5 hold down bolts, Torque them to spec. and adjust valves....With hyd. lifters you`ll need to preload them. The way I do it is to make sure the lifters plunger is all the way up, adjust valve to 0 lash then turn it another 1 1/2 turn...I`ve found that is on the loose side but has worked well for a street motor.

He probably can't preload them if they are full of oil. If he turns the bolt slowly then that would give the oil time to bleed off a little until the proper preload is achieved. That's what I ment by the hard way. Or get them close and finish them while the engine is running at idle.

dodgeman360...

From my reading of the Mopar Performance Engine book shows that the part number for "A" engine mechanical pushrod SET is P4529555.

The part number for individual mechanical pushrods is P4529541.

Good luck,

dodgeman360...

I can't speak to the small block valvetrain from personal experiance.

I only deal with big blocks.

On my big blocks you need to use the mechanical pushrods with the adjustable rockers even when using hyd. lifters.
The main difference...besides the overall length...is the end of the pushrod has a "cup" end for the adjustable rocker to fit properly. The hyd. pushrods have the same rounded dome on both ends.

The Mopar Performance engine catalog didn't specify what pushrods were to be used with the adjustable rockers. I can tell you that the factory mechanical cam small block (273ci) used the mechanical pushrods because of the adjustable rockers.

Hopefully someone on this board has a small block with the adjustable rockers that can either confirm or deny what I have told you.

Good luck,

Mopar maniac
Thanks for the info, reading the engines book it looks like the pushrods need to be shorter to go with the rockers as well as the cupped end but I'm still not 100% sure on witch ones.
Mopar has a set that you have to cut lenght then put the cups in, I hoping someone out here could give me an idea of how long they need to be to keep everthing in order without having to use the cut to lenght ones.
keep in mind .020 off the heads and .010 off the deck with thin gaskets .026 instead of thick ones at .040
