Need 4 Speed Auto...What to do???
I need another gear. I don't like hauling around at 3,500 RPM. I have a 727 transmission. What kind of 4 speed transmission will bolt up to my big block? 518, 618?
Any to be found at the local wrecking yard? |

As far as I know, there is no 4 speed auto that bolts up to any big block mopar. So that means time for an adapter and lots of fabrication and big dollars building whichever tranny to hold up behind the torque of a big block.
But....if your 727 is good, why not go with a gearvendors overdrive. once you remove the tail housing on your 727, it bolts up. just shorten the driveshaft, run the wires for the controls, and that's it. takes about a day to do. plus, they handle severe torque easily, your 727 would probably go south before the gearvendors did. costs @ 2200, buy you would spend that much in custom work and just building the 4spd tranny to hold up behind your big block. depending on what car you are putting it in, the 518/618 will require floorpan modification. Be prepared to bend over if you cannot weld/fabricate it yourself. my 2cents |

Take a look in the archives. There is the article on converting the Roach Runner from a 727 to a 518, using the JVX adapter.
